I am a hardcore bleeding heart liberal Democrat. My experience with black associates is almost universally negative. They are not conditioned to hold themselves to high standards and they are much "just show up" when it comes to their work. Around half retain the attitude that they're somehow contributing to the firm simply by being black. It's an awful situation and 90% quit within two years once they start to grasp that they're expected to bust their asses like everyone else.

I stand by that. there is a big difference between the more middle class blacks who have been around white professionals for much of their lives vs. the actual ghetto refugees. None of them work particularly hard or take proper ownership of their work, but the middle class black associates at least make moves like they're fully engaged with their work. There is a weird, groundless sense of entitlement from the other contingent, particularly grads of HBCUs. The post earlier in the thread about these people having the inherent value of diversity drilled into them like dogma their whole lives makes a lot of sense. I have worked with some very good black attorneys and judges too, but they're few and far between. A lot of the associates I have struggled with have otherwise been great people but they simply weren't good attorneys. They were mediocre at their jobs and definitely trend lazy. You can critique that for being anecdotal but I have been in his profession for 15 years and I see the same things over and over and over.

Also, a lot of black kids won't come from families with professional (or possibly even working) backgrounds, so they will have had less exposure to what employers actually look for in employees. It won't be as intuitive to them to try to demonstrate traits like dependability, reserve and professional interest in the interview.

When they're constantly drilled with the diversity narrative from all sides (including firms themselves), can you really blame them for asking about the firms diversity efforts? They probably actually believe that "diversifying" the firm actually makes sense from a non-EEOC driven business perspective. If you think that, then it makes perfect sense to play up "diversity" in the interview. You'd think it actually makes you valuable as an employee, instead of a liability.

But Michelle could also frustrate her supervisors. Quincy White, the partner who helped recruit Michelle and who headed the marketing group, remembers finding her a challenge to manage. She was, White recalls, "quite possibly the most ambitious associate that I've ever seen." She wanted significant responsibility right away and was not afraid to object if she wasn't getting what she felt she deserved, he says.

At big firms, much of the work that falls to young associates involves detail and tedium. There were all sorts of arcane but important rules about what could and could not be said or done in product advertisements, and in the marketing group, all the associates, not just the new ones, reviewed scripts for TV commercials to make sure they conformed. As far as associate work goes, it could have been worse -- "Advertising is a little sexier than spending a full year reading depositions in an antitrust law suit or reviewing documents for a big merger," says White -- but it was monotonous and relatively low-level.

Too monotonous for Michelle, who, White says, complained that the work he gave her was unsatisfactory. He says he gave her the Coors beer ads, which he considered one of the more glamorous assignments they had. Even then, he says, "she at one point went over my head and complained [to human resources] that I wasn't giving her enough interesting stuff, and the person came down to my office and said, 'Basically she's complaining that she's being treated like she's a second-year associate,' and we agreed that she was a second-year associate. I had eight or nine other associates, and I couldn't start treating one of them a lot better."

White says he talked to Michelle about her expectations, but the problem could not be resolved because the work was what it was. He is not sure any work he had would have satisfied her. "I couldn't give her something that would meet her sense of ambition to change the world."

"Not many people went over my head," says White. It was an unusual move for a young associate to make, and he believes it was consistent with her personality. She "wanted something that pushed her harder {lcub}hellip{rcub} Waiting five to seven years to make partner was a good career move for me but not for [her]. There are too many other opportunities out there {lcub}hellip{rcub} that mature faster than that."

Abner Mikva, a former congressman and federal judge who is close to the Obamas and was an early mentor to Barack, finds that account of Michelle's 20-something impatience amusing. "It doesn't surprise me at all," he says. Michelle is "clearly somebody who likes to make decisions and likes to be involved in exciting and important stuff. I can imagine writing memos for other lawyers -- I don't think that would have been her favorite dish of tea."

what's interesting, as someone who works in a big firm, is that law firm clients DO actively push diversity and demand more diversity partners and associates... but then they keep funneling their work through white males. if the companies actually cared they would seek out diverse people at big firms to give the work to directly.

The average black associate at my firm is out the door in under a year. I'm at a 'V100' shithole in L.A. that doesn't really work the associates that hard relative to peer firms and we're famous for our lax billable requirements in some of the support groups. The black associates act like it's a goddamn labor camp and still don't get their shit most of the time. The jobs they leave for are always ridiculous and great too, so can't really blame them. But COTdamn a few of these individuals + XO have really spurred me toward a racist point of view.

For me, though, the disconnect is the most troubling part. They don't seem to have any idea that they're shitty employees or that their work isn't respected or relied on to the degree that it is with most other associates. I dunno what xo racists are even talking about ITT. I've been lucky to work at pretty good firms, but I never really noticed black associates underperforming around me. All I noticed was (1) they're basically exempt from the 'geographic ties' requirement, and you always see black dudes at good firms in super-insular cities who've never set foot there before their callback; and (2) they don't make partner (which I guess I'll agree with xo racists to the limited extent that I don't think it's internal firm racism at all that causes that). Now that I think about it, #2 is probably in part due to #1.

I've had the experience described in the OP of a black applicant asking a bunch of diversity-oriented questions, but I always thought they were trying to impress/engage as well, and frankly almost all law students' questions are clueless and pointless. Law students don't know how to or care about distinguishing between firms; the Qs are for show ("see, I'm not an autist!") and, for faggots like the OP, to stoke the interviewers' egos.
