I honestly believe that practicing law makes many people go crazy. There are just too many stressful factors for most attorneys to handle this profession well.

I saw several gentle "philosophy and humanity-types" enter law school and the legal profession. They began as sweet, nice people. Years later, they were a hundred pounds heavier, angry, slamming down phones, mumbling obscenities, wiping their sweaty foreheads with their arms while revealing equally sweaty arm pits.

"Get me a pastrami sandwich and two orders of onion rings!" I once heard an attorney yell to his secretary.

At 9:00 in the morning!

You can see this type of attorney in every major city. If I'm riding down the street in a cab in Chicago and see a crowd of people hustling down the street, I can pick out the stressed-out lawyers as easily as a hawk spotting a mouse. Fifteen years ago, they may have been stick-thin seniors in college in a Starbucks writing poems about the beauty of life and thinking gentle thoughts. "It would be nice to leave a flower by her door with a note about how good she looks today."

Now the same person is a 250-pound divorced beast who will start screaming obscenities when they bump into someone on the street.

He's incredible. The thing with him is he produces these massive 50+ page screeds on many topics, so you have to wade through a lot to pick out gens like this one.

But a lot of what he writes is very entertaining.

Over the past year I have represented a couple of former Olympic athletes (now attorneys) with decent, but not stellar qualifications. You would have thought the opposite, however. There was literally a major feeding frenzy over both of them—even though their practice areas were not in very much demand. One attorney received at least 10 offers and the other at least five. This all occurred when much more qualified candidates (from better firms, better law schools, and with better grades) were not experiencing even a fraction of this success. What was going on? The only thing I could think of was what one firm said to me when it wanted to interview one of these candidates:

“We want our attorneys to be competitive.”

1:55 PM - August 11th, 2017

LOL at this flame.

What was going on? "Our clients are morons. They pay us $750 an hour for our advice on average and we barely understand their businesses and do like 20 minutes of Google research on a topic before calling them back or shitting out a memo. But they're catching on to our act, so we need shiny things to distract them."

7:36 PM - August 10th, 2017

I agree that practicing law is SHIT, PURE SHIT. It's miserable, and even as a solo, I hate actually practicing. I hate dealing with clients' problems, asshole attorneys, and deadlines that accidentally missing could result in disbarment and a malpractice lawsuit.

But I never understood this guy's schtick. Isn't he a recruiter? Isn't he supposed to paint law as a rosy, happy career and pretend that your shitty job is just an anomaly? How does this schtick help with recruiting?

\'\"\"\'\'\'\"\"\'

7:44 PM - August 10th, 2017

This is why you're not in sales.

You want a guy who *gets* you and your struggle. Harrison offers you that. You go to this guy and he gets you a job but he knows why you're going in the first place: because you work for sociopaths and deep down you know you're just looking for the next, hopefully slightly-less-sociopathic place.

7:48 PM - August 10th, 2017

I "just do sales" to get potential client every day. It's about selling them hope. His pitch concedes that all law is pure steaming, fetid shit. I would agree with you if it was a pitch about how shitty most law is but about how the right fit can change everything.

Instead, it's mostly just "LOL law = shit. That's why I'm a recruiter instead of a lawyer." That's a sentiment I totally get it. But it just makes me want to be a recruiter, not a lawyer.

\'\"\"\'\'\'\"\"\'

8:05 PM - August 10th, 2017

Lawyers are pussies, yes? They aren't going to "leave law" (OMG WHAT WOULD MY CLASSMATES FROM LAW REVIEW THINK?!!??!?!) and be recruiters. They're going to stay fucking lawyers.

Plus he deals with the most risk averse of them all: usually larger firm lawyers.

This dude knows how to manipulate the psyche of the lawyer.

Among other things he said going inhouse makes it harder to get other inhouse jobs, which is such transparently self-serving bullshit that he should be laughed out of his profession. It wasn't even really true 15 years ago, but the oldest boomers still think that way because they're idiots.

[_____Signature Line_____]

2:10 PM - August 11th, 2017

lol. Wtf?

FME, being inhouse gives you a boost over pvt practice attorneys. In large part because the practice is different -- need social skills, understand that you're another line item in the expense budget, be chill with coworkers, not be a fucking striver (well not all the time), etc.

Interviewed a guy from V10 recently. Total fucking striver. I can see him just irritating the paralegals and staff by treating them like shit. Sure, they aren't the best, but they are invaluable wrt office politics, etc.
