it's a millennial fag thing. they like they idea of being united rather than divided. even LeBron would rather play with his all-star friends than compete like an alpha to win a title

i thought "united" teams were from when more than one club merged way back in the day. that can't be true of new MLS teams. or do i need to grow a beard?

Yes it is...ive given you Sheffield and Manchester... Give me one the other way.

Sheffield United Cricket Club was the first sports club or association in England to bear the word "United" in its name, common amongst association football clubs in England today.

Frank Lloyd Wrong

12:31 AM - March 4th, 2017

Keep reading dumbass

Sheffield United Cricket Club was formed in 1854, by several local cricket clubs (one of them being the Wednesday club) in Sheffield uniting,

EXPLOSIVE diarrhea!!!!

12:35 AM - March 4th, 2017

Ok fine...

Following growing disputes over the running and financing of the club, in June 1900 Thames Ironworks F.C. was disbanded,[4] then almost immediately relaunched on 5 July 1900 as West Ham United F.C.

Point being using united without a unification is hardly new or unique to mls.

Frank Lloyd Wrong

12:44 AM - March 4th, 2017

Well often times they had competing board members or supporter groups / pubs that would "unite" going forward. Leeds united was like this even though it was a new club formed after the demise of Leeds City . But it wasnt as cynical and soulless as MLS

Yes and no- some teams were named "United" because of the merger, and other teams just copied it

Newcastle United was born from a merger

Man U just decided to use United

Same w/ West Ham and other teams

No need to grow a beard...but:

In January 1902, with debts of £2,670 equivalent to £260,000 in 2017[nb 1] the club was served with a winding-up order.[15] Captain Harry Stafford found four local businessmen, including John Henry Davies (who became club president), each willing to invest £500 in return for a direct interest in running the club and who subsequently changed the name;[16] on 24 April 1902, Manchester United was officially born.

Ohh what a "uniting" of teams!

EXPLOSIVE diarrhea!!!!

12:16 AM - March 4th, 2017

Its just an old term they used when naming clubs in England in 1900. Like the city was united behind them or whatever. It doesn't actually mean anything for Manchester either.

Pro sports teams should just start out as the name of the city-- e.g., Philadelphia. As time goes on and they build a fan base and as journalists cover the team, the nickname can evolve organically. This is what happened in baseball in the early years (Cubs, Red Sox, Indians, etc.)
